What Spring Turns Into Summer Does To Your System
Your AC sits idle for months, then gets asked to run most of the day. Capacitors that were weak in October fail on the first hot week. Condensate drains that dried out over winter are packed with dust and algae, so the pan fills and the safety switch shuts the system down. Outdoor coils collect cottonwood, grass clippings and pollen, which chokes airflow and drives head pressure up. In attic installs, the temperature above the ceiling climbs fast, so any duct leak or weak blower shows up as rooms that never catch up after two in the afternoon. Running a full cooling cycle in April tells you more than guessing in July.
Which Failures Spike, And When
Late April through May is capacitor and contactor season. The unit hums, the fan does not spin, and the house drifts warm. June brings drain line clogs as humidity climbs, especially in Louisiana and East Texas. July and August are when low refrigerant charge and dirty coils turn into frozen indoor coils and warm air at the vents. Hail runs through the region in spring, and bent or flattened condenser fins from a storm show up weeks later as a system that runs constantly and still cannot keep up. We also see undersized returns in 1990s subdivisions cause high static pressure once the load peaks, which shortens blower motor life.
The Checks You Can Safely Do Yourself
Start with the thermostat. Fresh batteries, set to cool, fan on auto, and a setpoint several degrees below room temperature. Change the filter if it is grey or if you cannot remember the last one. Walk the house and confirm supply vents and returns are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. Outside, clear leaves, mulch and grass clippings back about two feet from the condenser and cut back anything growing against it. Check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker and reset it once. If it trips again, stop and call us. Leave refrigerant, gas and wiring alone. Those are ours to handle.
Signs You Should Book Air Conditioner Repair Now
Call before the heat, not during it. Book if the system takes longer than it used to reach setpoint, if you hear a hum without the outdoor fan turning, or if you see water around the indoor unit or a wet spot on the ceiling below an attic air handler. Ice on the refrigerant line, a burning smell on startup and breakers that trip more than once all need a technician. If you smell gas at any time of year, leave the building first, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Call us after the utility has made the site safe.

Usually a failed capacitor or motor, sometimes a seized bearing. Turn the system off at the thermostat so it does not keep drawing power and call us. Do not reach into the unit or spin the fan.
