A Frozen AC Coil and What Causes the Ice

Ice on an evaporator coil means your AC is still running but has stopped moving heat properly. Here is what causes it, what you can safely check, and what we do when we arrive.

What Ice on the Coil Actually Means
A frozen evaporator coil is a symptom, never the root problem. The coil gets cold by design, but it stays above freezing because warm indoor air keeps flowing across it. Take away enough airflow, or drop the refrigerant pressure too low, and the coil surface falls below 32 degrees. Moisture in the air condenses and freezes instead of draining away. Once ice forms it blocks even more airflow, so the freeze feeds itself. That is why the house gets warmer while the equipment runs harder. Shut the cooling off at the thermostat and leave the fan on to thaw before anyone tries to diagnose anything.
Cause One: Airflow Restrictions, the Cheapest Fix
Most frozen coils we see across Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana come down to airflow. A filter loaded with dust and pet hair is the usual suspect, especially in July when the system runs most of the day. Closed or blocked supply vents matter too, and so do returns hidden behind furniture. In a lot of 1990s subdivisions the return duct was undersized from day one, so the system is already starving before the filter gets dirty. Attic air handlers add another wrinkle because flex duct can kink or pull loose above the insulation. Airflow problems are the first thing we measure, because fixing anything else without fixing airflow just refreezes the coil.
Cause Two: Dirty Coil or Failing Blower
If the filter is clean and the vents are open, the restriction may be inside the equipment. Years of fine dust get past even a good filter and build a felt-like mat on the upstream face of the evaporator coil. Air cannot pass through it, and the coil ices over in exactly the same pattern. A blower wheel caked with grime moves far less air than its rating suggests, and a weak motor or a failing capacitor will do the same. On variable-speed equipment, a control board fault can drop the blower to low speed and hold it there. These need the unit opened up and airflow measured, not guessed at.
Cause Three: Low Refrigerant or a Metering Problem
Low refrigerant charge lowers the pressure in the coil, which lowers its temperature, which grows ice. Refrigerant does not get used up, so low charge means a leak somewhere in the coil, the line set or the outdoor unit. Hail-dented condenser fins and rubbed line sets are common causes in our region. A restricted or stuck metering device causes the same freeze pattern without any leak at all. This is sealed-system work under high pressure and there is nothing safe for a homeowner to open, adjust or add. What You Can Safely Check, and What We Do Differently
Safe homeowner checks are short. Switch cooling off and the fan to ON so the ice can melt, check the thermostat settings and batteries, look for a tripped breaker, change the filter, walk the house and confirm supply and return vents are open and clear, and pull weeds or leaves away from the outdoor unit. That is the list. When we come out for AC repair we measure static pressure and temperature split, check superheat and subcooling, inspect the coil and blower wheel, and test the metering device. Then we tell you which of those cause families is actually driving the freeze and what the repair involves.

Can I just chip the ice off the coil?
No. Aluminum fins and copper tubing bend or puncture easily, and a punctured coil turns a repair into a replacement. Turn cooling off, set the fan to ON, and let the ice melt on its own before anyone inspects it.
How long does a frozen coil take to thaw?
With the fan running and cooling off, usually one to three hours depending on how much ice built up. A heavy block can take longer. Keep a towel or pan handy, because the melt water often overwhelms the drain pan.
Will running the AC anyway hurt anything?
Yes. Liquid refrigerant can return to the compressor when the coil is iced, and that shortens compressor life. You also risk water overflowing the drain pan into ceilings or attic insulation. Shut cooling off and call for air conditioner repair.
