What the installation actually involves
Most whole-home air purifiers mount at the air handler or furnace, either in the return plenum or just downstream of the filter rack. We cut and seal a housing into the sheet metal, run low-voltage power, and tie the unit into the blower so it works whenever air moves. On an attic air handler that means working the tight side of the unit, so we plan access before we start. Typical visits run a few hours. We seal every cut we make, because a leaky plenum pulls in dirty attic air and undoes the work.
What we check before we install anything
We start with airflow, since a purifier only cleans the air it sees. We measure static pressure, look at return size and count, check the filter for the right depth and fit, and inspect duct joints for gaps. Plenty of 1990s houses in the region have one undersized return doing the job of two, and that limits any IAQ equipment you add. We also look at the evaporator coil and blower wheel for dust buildup, which tells us how much unfiltered air has been getting through.
How we decide a purifier is the right call
We recommend one when the complaint matches what the equipment can fix. Fine dust, pollen, smoke and odors respond well to media and air-cleaning equipment. Humidity problems, musty smells from a wet crawlspace, or air pulled from a hot attic through leaky ducts need a different repair first, and we will say so. Sometimes a properly sized filter cabinet and sealed return solves most of it for less work. If a purifier still makes sense after that, we will explain what it will and will not change.

Will a whole-home air purifier make my AC work harder?
It can, if the wrong unit goes in. Air-cleaning equipment adds resistance, so we measure static pressure first and choose a housing your blower can handle. On tight duct systems we address airflow before adding anything.
Does it replace my regular filter?
Usually not. Most whole-home purifiers work alongside a media filter that catches larger dust and protects the coil. We will show you which filters need changing, how often, and what size to buy.
How long before I notice a difference?
Odors often improve within a day or two of runtime. Dust on surfaces takes longer, usually a few weeks, since existing dust in the ducts and carpet keeps circulating until the system works through it.
