AC Compressor Repair

We repair and replace failed AC compressors on residential air conditioning systems across Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. You need this work when the outdoor unit hums but the fan will not spin, when the breaker trips every time cooling starts, or when air from the vents stays warm while the condenser runs hard. Turn the system off at the thermostat so it stops cycling, then call us. Compressor work involves refrigerant under pressure and high-voltage wiring, so it is not a homeowner job. We will diagnose before we quote anything.

What Compressor Repair Actually Involves

The compressor is the pump that moves refrigerant through your system, and it sits inside the outdoor condenser. Most calls that sound like a bad compressor are not. A failed run capacitor, a burnt contactor, a bad start relay or a hard-wired short can all stop the compressor from turning while leaving the compressor itself healthy. We test electrically first, then check windings, amp draw and refrigerant pressures. If the compressor is genuinely locked or shorted to ground, we talk about replacement options for the outdoor unit.

What We Check Before We Touch Anything

We start at the disconnect and the breaker, then read voltage at the contactor and test the capacitor under load. From there we measure compressor amp draw against the data plate, check windings for continuity and shorts, and look at suction and liquid line pressures with the system running. We also inspect coil condition, since hail-flattened fins and a clogged condenser will cook a compressor over a few summers. Filters, returns and airflow get a look too, because starved airflow is a common root cause.

How We Decide Repair Or Replace

A compressor that failed because of a cheap electrical part gets that part replaced and runs for years. A compressor with shorted windings, an acid-burnt oil charge or metal in the refrigerant line is a different conversation, because contamination will kill the next one. We weigh the age of the outdoor unit, the refrigerant type it uses, the condition of the coil and whether the indoor equipment matches. Then we lay out both paths in plain language and let you choose. No pressure either way.

AC Compressor Repair — quick answers

Why does my outdoor unit hum without starting?

That hum is often the compressor trying to start against a dead capacitor or a stuck relay. Shut the system off at the thermostat so it stops straining and call us for diagnosis. Running it that way can damage the windings.

Can a compressor be repaired, or does it get replaced?

Internal parts of a sealed compressor cannot be rebuilt in the field. What we repair are the electrical components that make it start and run. If the compressor itself has failed internally, replacement is the fix.

How long does compressor replacement take?

Most single-day jobs, once parts are on hand. We recover refrigerant, swap the compressor, replace the filter drier, pull a deep vacuum and recharge to weight. Warranty parts sometimes add a day for delivery.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on your porch help us arrive with the right parts.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, the indoor coil and blower, then the outdoor unit and electrical side. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why it failed.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We walk you through the fix and any parts involved before we start. Once you say go, we make the repair and confirm the system is holding temperature before we leave your driveway.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for hard summersWe work on attic air handlers in July heat, undersized returns in older subdivisions, and condensers with hail-flattened fins. Those are everyday jobs across the region, so we know where these systems tend to give out first.
  • Air conditioner repair and heating repairOne crew for both seasons. Air conditioning repair when the house won't cool, heater repair and furnace repair when the burners won't stay lit. Same technicians, same records, so nobody starts from scratch in November.
  • We explain the failureYou hear which component failed and what it was doing to the rest of the system. If a repair is a short-term patch on an aging unit, we say so and let you decide the timing.
  • Respect for the houseDrop cloths, shoe covers, and the attic hatch closed the way we found it. We keep the work area clean and we tell you honestly when a problem is airflow or ductwork rather than the equipment itself.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
