Heat Pump Repair — Book a Visit Today

We repair heat pumps across Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, in cooling mode and heating mode both, and the next step is a service call so we can put gauges and a meter on it. Common failures we find are stuck reversing valves, failed defrost boards and sensors, low refrigerant charge from a leak, bad contactors and capacitors, and outdoor fan motors that quit after a hail season chews up the fins. A visit starts with your complaint, then a look at the thermostat call, the indoor blower and the outdoor unit under load. We explain what failed and what it takes to fix it before we start. Call us with what you are seeing and we will get you on the schedule.

Heat Pump Repair — residential heat pump being serviced

The heat pump symptoms we hear most

  • It blows cool air when the heat is on Reversing valve stuck in cooling, or the system is running on the blower only with no compressor call
  • The outdoor unit is buried in ice Defrost control board, defrost thermostat or sensor failure, or low airflow across the outdoor coil
  • The furnace side runs but the heat pump never does Dual-fuel changeover fault, outdoor thermostat setting or a bad control wire between the two stages
  • It runs all day and the house never gets warm Low refrigerant charge from a leak, failing compressor or a dirty outdoor coil limiting heat transfer
  • Loud bang or clunk when it switches from heat to cool Reversing valve solenoid, worn compressor mounts or refrigerant pressures equalising hard

Whether you call it heat pump repair or heat pump service, the work is identical and so is the quote you approve first.

Safe things to check first

Worth a look before you call — sometimes it saves you the visit.

  • 1Check the thermostat: fresh batteries, set to Heat, and the fan set to Auto rather than On.
  • 2Look at the breaker panel for a tripped breaker on the air handler or the outdoor unit, and reset it once.
  • 3Change the filter if it is grey or matted, since restricted airflow causes freeze ups and short cycling.
  • 4Clear leaves, grass clippings, snow and any stacked items at least two feet back from the outdoor unit.

Heat Pump Repair — quick answers

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?

Usually the reversing valve is not shifting, the compressor is not coming on, or the system is running electric backup heat only. It can also be a low refrigerant charge. We test the valve, the controls and the charge on site.{ }

Is ice on the outdoor unit normal?

A light frost that clears during a defrost cycle is normal. A solid block of ice covering the coil is not, and it usually means the defrost board, sensor or reversing valve failed. Shut the system off and call us.

What is a dual-fuel system?

It pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. The heat pump handles milder weather and the furnace takes over when it turns cold. Most complaints are changeover controls or wiring, not the equipment itself.

Can you repair a heat pump or does it need replacing?

Most calls are repairs: capacitors, contactors, boards, sensors, motors and leaks. We tell you what failed, what the repair involves and how the rest of the system looks, then you decide.

Why does my heat pump run so much longer than my old furnace did?

Heat pumps deliver heat at a lower temperature, so longer run times are normal in cold weather. If it runs constantly and the house still feels cold, something is wrong and we should look at it.

I smell gas near my dual-fuel furnace. What do I do?

Leave the building first, take everyone with you, then call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Do not touch switches or the thermostat. Once the gas company clears the home, call us for the heating repair.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on your porch help us arrive with the right parts.

  2. Step 2

    We diagnose on site

A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, the indoor coil and blower, then the outdoor unit and electrical side. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why it failed.

  3. Step 3

    You approve the repair

We walk you through the fix and any parts involved before we start. Once you say go, we make the repair and confirm the system is holding temperature before we leave your driveway.

Why homeowners call us

  • Built for hard summersWe work on attic air handlers in July heat, undersized returns in older subdivisions, and condensers with hail-flattened fins. Those are everyday jobs across the region, so we know where these systems tend to give out first.
  • Air conditioner repair and heating repairOne crew for both seasons. Air conditioning repair when the house won't cool, heater repair and furnace repair when the burners won't stay lit. Same technicians, same records, so nobody starts from scratch in November.
  • We explain the failureYou hear which component failed and what it was doing to the rest of the system. If a repair is a short-term patch on an aging unit, we say so and let you decide the timing.
  • Respect for the houseDrop cloths, shoe covers, and the attic hatch closed the way we found it. We keep the work area clean and we tell you honestly when a problem is airflow or ductwork rather than the equipment itself.
  • All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
  • Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
