Capacitor & Fan Motor Replacement

What the job involves
A capacitor stores the jolt of electricity a motor needs to start and keep turning. When it weakens, the motor draws too much current and overheats, so a bad capacitor left alone can take the fan motor or the compressor with it. We shut off power at the disconnect, discharge the capacitor safely, test the motor windings and bearings, then install a replacement matched to the microfarad and voltage rating the unit calls for. This is high-voltage work and it is not a homeowner task.
What we check and install
We meter the existing capacitor against its rating, check the contactor for pitted points, and read amp draw on the motor once it is running. Bulging tops, oil residue and burnt terminals tell us plenty before the meter does. On the fan motor side we spin the blade by hand for bearing drag, inspect the blade for hail-bent or cracked fins, and clear grass and debris from the condenser. New motors get the correct rotation, mount and blade set, plus a fresh capacitor sized to that motor.
How we decide it is the right call
A weak capacitor with a healthy motor is a straightforward part swap and we say so. If the motor is drawing high amps, shows scored bearings or has burnt windings, replacing the capacitor alone just buys a few weeks. We also look at the age of the system, the condition of the coil and whether the compressor has been running under strain. If a repair does not make sense on an old, leaking unit, we lay out that option too and let you choose.

Why did my capacitor fail in the first place?
Heat and run time. Long summer stretches, a dirty condenser coil and low airflow all push a capacitor harder. Power surges and simple age do the rest. Most fail after years of normal cycling, not from anything you did.
Can I just add a hard start kit instead?
A hard start kit helps a struggling compressor in some cases, but it does not fix a failed run capacitor or a bad fan motor. We test first and recommend the part that actually solves the fault.
Do I need a new motor if the fan spins when I nudge it?
Not always. A fan that runs after a push usually points to the capacitor. We still check amp draw and bearing condition, because a motor that has been overheating can fail soon after.
