What Crowding Does to the Unit Over Time
The outdoor unit works by pulling air across the coil and throwing heat out the top. Block the sides and it re-breathes its own hot air, so head pressure climbs and the compressor runs longer for less cooling. You feel that as a house that never quite gets to setpoint on a bad afternoon, then as higher run times. Over a few seasons, grass clippings, cottonwood fluff and dryer-vent lint mat into the fins and stay there. Cottonwood is the worst offender across much of the region. The end of that road is a compressor working hot for years and failing early, usually on the hottest week of the year.
The Clearance That Actually Works
Give the unit about two feet of open space on every side and five feet of clear sky above it. Nothing stored against the cabinet, no plywood or patio furniture leaned on it, no lattice screen tight to the fins. If you want to hide it, set the screen back so air can move behind it and leave one side fully open for service access. Keep planting beds away from the base, because roots and soil wash up against the pan and hold moisture. Also watch what sits above it. A dryer vent, a bird feeder or a gutter downspout pointed at the top fan is a slow clogging problem you will not see until the coil is packed.
The Simple Habit, and How Often
Walk the unit once a month during cooling season and pull anything that has landed or grown within arm's reach. That means leaves and grass out of the base, vines off the cabinet, and shrubs trimmed back to the two-foot line. When you mow, aim the discharge chute away from the unit instead of into it. Twice a year, in spring before the heat and again in fall, do a longer look: check that the pad has not tilted, that the disconnect box lid is closed, and that no critter has nested underneath. Rinsing the outside of the coil with a garden hose on gentle flow is fine. Turn the system off at the thermostat first, and stop there. Anything behind the panels is ours.
Hail, Pads and Other Regional Realities
Storms across Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana flatten condenser fins, and flattened fins choke airflow the same way a hedge does. After a hail event, look at the coil from the side. If the fin surface looks dented and folded rather than combed straight, tell us and take photos before anything gets touched, because that can matter for a claim. Settling is the other one. Pads sink on clay soil, and a unit tipped more than slightly puts the compressor at an angle it was not built to run at, while the refrigerant lines take the strain. If a level laid across the top rocks noticeably, call. Re-setting a pad is straightforward work when it is caught early.
Warning Signs It Is Already Too Late for a Trim
Some symptoms mean the airflow problem has moved past yard work. Ice on the copper lines or the outdoor coil, a unit that runs and runs without the house cooling, a breaker that trips on hot afternoons, or a metallic scream and hard grinding from the fan area. Warm air out of the vents while the outdoor fan spins is another. So is a smell of hot electrical insulation near the cabinet. Can I build a fence or screen around my outdoor unit?
Yes, if you keep it loose. Set any screen at least two feet off the cabinet, leave the top wide open, and keep one side fully accessible so a technician can pull panels. A tight enclosure traps hot air and shortens compressor life.
Do I need to cover the unit in winter?
A full wrap is not needed and can trap moisture and invite rodents. If you want to keep leaves out of the top, a breathable lid-style cover on the fan only is fine. Never cover the sides, since heat pumps run in winter.
How close can plants and mulch be?
Keep shrubs trimmed back about two feet and keep mulch and soil from piling against the base. Growth against the fins blocks airflow, and damp mulch at the cabinet holds water where the metal meets the pad, which speeds up rust.
