Age tells us what to expect, not what to do
A system's age changes the odds, but it does not decide anything on its own. Cooling equipment in our region works long hours in heat that does not let up, so a unit that has been running hard for a decade or more has earned some wear. We look at how it was installed, whether it got filter changes, and whether the outdoor coil has been cleaned or left packed with grass clippings and cottonwood fluff. A well-installed older system with one failed part is usually a repair. A young system that was undersized or wired wrong may need bigger corrections than a part swap. Age is a factor we weigh, never the verdict.
The type of fault matters more than the age
Faults fall into rough groups. Controls and electrical parts like capacitors, contactors, control boards and blower motors are normal wear items, and replacing them is straightforward air conditioner repair. Refrigerant leaks are the fork in the road. A leak at a service valve or a line joint is often repairable. A leak inside the evaporator coil or a corroded condenser coil is a bigger job, and if the compressor has already run low on charge for a season, the damage may be spread through the system. A locked-up compressor on an older unit is the case where we start talking honestly about replacement instead.
Parts availability and matching the equipment
Two practical questions decide a lot of these calls. First, can we still get the part? Older systems and discontinued models sometimes have parts that are back-ordered or gone, and waiting weeks in July is not a plan. Second, does the replacement part match the rest of the system? Outdoor units and indoor coils are designed to work as a pair. Putting a new outdoor unit on an old indoor coil, or the reverse, usually means the system never performs the way either piece was designed to. If matching parts are not available, replacing the pair is often the cleaner answer, and we will say so.
How the conversation goes on the visit
We start with the symptom you called about, then check the whole system rather than the one part that failed. That means static pressure and airflow, return sizing, duct condition, the state of the coils, the electrical connections, and how the attic air handler is set up and drained. Undersized returns are common in 1990s subdivisions, and they quietly shorten equipment life. Then we tell you what failed, what caused it, what the repair involves, and whether we expect other parts to follow soon. You get the options and the reasoning. You make the call, and we are fine either way.
Honest cases where replacement wins
Some situations point one direction. A failed compressor on an older system, an evaporator coil leak plus a corroded condenser coil, a system using a refrigerant that is being phased down, or a unit that has needed three unrelated repairs in two summers. Add the case where the equipment was never the right size for the house, because no repair fixes that. Hail is another one. Flattened condenser fins can sometimes be combed out, but a hailstorm that also split a coil or crushed the cabinet may be a replacement conversation and an insurance conversation. We will document what we find so you have something to work with.

Fix the AC or Replace It — common questions
Can I just add refrigerant every summer instead of fixing the leak?
We do not recommend it. Refrigerant does not get used up, so if it is low there is a leak, and running a system short on charge stresses the compressor. Finding and fixing the leak protects the equipment you already own.
My outdoor unit took hail damage. Does it need replacing?
Not always. Bent fins alone often still cool, though airflow suffers and the unit runs hotter. If hail split a coil, damaged the fan or crushed the cabinet, replacement is more likely. We inspect and document it for your claim.
Should I replace the indoor coil and outdoor unit at the same time?
Usually yes. They are engineered as a matched pair, and mixing an old coil with a new outdoor unit tends to cost you capacity and reliability. If one has failed on an aging system, we price both.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call or fill in the quote form with what you hear, smell or feel. Warm air, short cycling, a breaker that keeps tripping. Details on your porch help us arrive with the right parts.
- Step 2
We diagnose on site
A technician checks the thermostat, airflow, the indoor coil and blower, then the outdoor unit and electrical side. You get a plain explanation of what failed and why it failed.
- Step 3
You approve the repair
We walk you through the fix and any parts involved before we start. Once you say go, we make the repair and confirm the system is holding temperature before we leave your driveway.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for hard summersWe work on attic air handlers in July heat, undersized returns in older subdivisions, and condensers with hail-flattened fins. Those are everyday jobs across the region, so we know where these systems tend to give out first.
- Air conditioner repair and heating repairOne crew for both seasons. Air conditioning repair when the house won't cool, heater repair and furnace repair when the burners won't stay lit. Same technicians, same records, so nobody starts from scratch in November.
- We explain the failureYou hear which component failed and what it was doing to the rest of the system. If a repair is a short-term patch on an aging unit, we say so and let you decide the timing.
- Respect for the houseDrop cloths, shoe covers, and the attic hatch closed the way we found it. We keep the work area clean and we tell you honestly when a problem is airflow or ductwork rather than the equipment itself.
- All major brands, gas & electricOne independent crew for Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem and more.
- Straight answersIf a system is not worth repairing, we say so, often right on the phone.
