If You Smell Gas or Smoke, Handle Safety First
If you smell gas, smell burning, or see smoke near the furnace or air handler, get everyone out of the house first. Then, from outside, call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line. Do not go back in to flip breakers, open windows, or look for the source. Once the utility says the house is safe, call us and we will inspect the heating and cooling equipment. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, treat it the same way: outside first, emergency call second, everything else after. A tripping breaker on its own is not usually a fire, but burning smells and gas odours change the order of operations completely.
The Safe Checks You Can Do Yourself
Once you know there is no gas smell and no smoke, there are a handful of things worth looking at. Check the thermostat settings and batteries, because a thermostat cycling oddly can make the system short cycle. Look at your filter and change it if it is grey and packed, since a starved blower works harder. Walk outside and clear grass clippings, leaves, and cottonwood fuzz from around the condenser so it can breathe. Confirm supply vents and returns inside are open and not blocked by furniture or rugs. That is the full list. Anything involving refrigerant, gas piping, capacitors, or wiring is ours to handle.
What Not to Do With a Tripping Breaker
Do not keep resetting the breaker over and over. One reset to see whether it holds is reasonable. Repeated resets push current through a fault and can cook wiring or the compressor. Do not tape, wedge, or replace the breaker with a larger one. That breaker size matches the wire in your walls, and going bigger removes the protection instead of fixing the cause. Do not open the disconnect box outside or the electrical panel on the air handler. Do not add refrigerant or poke at the contactor. If the breaker will not hold, leave it off and let the system sit until we get eyes on it.
What Usually Causes It in Homes Across Our Region
In older subdivisions across Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana we see the same short list. A failing capacitor makes the compressor draw hard on startup and trip the breaker within seconds. A dirty condenser coil, common after hail damage bends the fins, forces long runtimes and high amp draw. A shorted compressor winding trips instantly, every time. Attic air handlers with undersized returns run hot and stress the blower motor. Loose lugs in the disconnect can arc and heat up. Rodent-chewed low voltage wiring shorts intermittently, which is why the trip seems random. Diagnosis is an amp reading and a few measurements, not guesswork.
When to Call Us and What Happens Next
Call us as soon as the breaker trips twice, or immediately if it will not hold at all. For air conditioning repair we start with amp draw on the compressor and blower, then check the capacitor, contactor, coil condition, and refrigerant charge. For heating repair the process is similar on the blower and control side. Can I just replace the breaker with a bigger one?
No. The breaker is sized to the wire behind your wall, so a larger one lets the wire overheat before anything trips. The breaker is reporting a problem in the heating and cooling system, not causing it.
Why does it only trip on the hottest afternoons?
Heat raises the pressure the compressor works against, so amp draw climbs. A weak capacitor or a dirty coil that copes at 85 degrees will push past the breaker limit at 102. Same fault, worse conditions.
Is it safe to run the fan only while I wait?
Usually yes, if the breaker that tripped serves the outdoor unit and the indoor blower runs on its own circuit without any burning smell. If the breaker feeding the air handler is the one tripping, leave it off and call us.
